Care, Guidance & Support
Care of Students
On entry to The Clere School children are placed in a tutor group of approximately 25 students. The Year Leader of our new Year 7 students works to ensure that all children are placed in tutor groups in which they will be happy.
Tutors meet their groups for registration every morning and every afternoon. The tutor is responsible for your child’s day-today well-being and is a very important person in your child’s life at school. Tutors welcome any information about your child which you would like to tell us. The work of the tutor is supported by the Year Leader who ensures that the progress system effectively identifies young people who may not be making progress and organizes effective intervention activities.
We know every child as an individual learner through the tutor network and through the tracking system. We set school targets early in Year 7 and progress towards these is monitored very closely. Targets are placed in Planners so that parents can share in the monitoring and contact the school if they have any questions about progress. Each week the tutor discusses progress with their tutees and new strategies for improvement are agreed where appropriate.
Our children enjoy good food. We have a healthy menu with fresh dishes prepared each day by our catering staff. We have an increasingly good reputation for the quality of the food we offer to our students.
We are delighted that The Clere received the National Healthy Schools Award. The four core themes of National Healthy School status are:
personal, social and health education
healthy eating
physical activity
emotional health and well-being
These themes underpin our ethos and reinforce our commitment to the ‘National Every Child Matters’ agenda of:
stay safe
be healthy
achieve economic well-being
make a positive contribution
enjoy and achieve
Special Needs
Liaison with primary schools ensures that any student with special needs experiences a smooth transition to secondary school. All students in Year 7 are screened for reading and spelling early in their first term so that focused tuition may be provided and, where appropriate, individual programmes are planned in partnership with parents.
Often, effective support for individuals happens in the context of the lesson. However, occasionally when appropriate, a student may be withdrawn to enable them to gain a specific skill. Specific skills might include literacy, numeracy, more advanced organisation or higher order study skills. The students themselves, their parents or teacher, may request this help. The Individual Needs policy is available on request via the school office or can be downloaded from the website. Parents are welcome to seek help or advice from the
Individual Needs Coordinator by letter or telephone at any time.
The school reviews provision for students with disability annually, details of which are available in the school’s accessibility plan on the website.
